Sherri Ann Smith

In Loving Memory of Sherri Ann Smith

Sherri Ann Smith, 56, a beloved wife, daughter, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023, in Ventnor City, NJ. She left this world surrounded by the love of family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and cherished memories.

Born in Ephrata, PA on January 31, 1967, Sherri was the daughter of Cheryl I. and the late William B. Smith.  She spent her childhood in Allentown, PA, graduating from Emmaus High School.  Sherri went on to graduate from Moore College of Art and was a longtime resident of Philadelphia, PA prior to moving to Ventnor City, NJ.

Early in life, Sherri was blessed with artistic talents which won awards and were even on display at the Pennsylvania Capitol.  She transformed her artistic passion into a successful career as a gifted and accomplished interior designer and project manager.  Sherri worked with renowned design firms, leaving an indelible mark on projects that spanned the globe.

In her devoted husband Alex, Sherri found a kindred spirit, and their union was a source of joy, companionship, and unwavering support. Their love story was a testament to the depth of affection and connection that can be shared between two people. Together, Sherri and Alex wove a tapestry of immeasurable happiness.

In 2015, Sherri was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and breast cancer, and thus began a challenging journey that would test her mettle and determination. The details of her battle with cancer may have been unknown, but what was evident to all was her unwavering courage and refusal to be defined by the illness.  In those final weeks, Alex and her mother, Cheryl, provided not only physical care but also emotional support, creating a space where she could find comfort and peace.

From the beginning, Sherri and Alex had a special connection with our four-legged companions. Their home was a haven for dogs in need, and they opened their heart and doors to provide a loving environment for those without a home. The joy that they found in the company of dogs was infectious, and their dedication to ensuring their well-being was steadfast.

Sherri was a proud member of the Independence Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Philadelphia for over 7 years, serving on the board, for most of that time including 4 years as Chapter Regent. Sherri was recognized as the 2021 Outstanding Chapter Regent.  Sherri proved her lineage to 10 DAR Patriots, but her joy came from the community service opportunities. Sherri established a pollinator garden at the Edgar Allen Poe House, served on the State Scholarship committee, served as the Registration Chair for the State Conference Committee, took on chapter projects- sending care packages and hundreds of cards to active military; laying wreaths at veteran cemeteries for Wreaths Across America; presenting DAR ROTC awards to local Cadets; and her favorite- Pizza/ Bingo Night for veterans at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Medical Center in Philadelphia.  Sherri was a tireless advocate for the values and principles the DAR holds dear.

Engaging in various endeavors, Sherri was also a member of both the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the German Society of Pennsylvania, contributing as a member and serving on the Board of Assistants for the former. In addition, Sherri took pleasure in exploring Italy and sought solace in vacations at the Outer Banks.

Sherri is survived by her husband of 24 years, Alex Nichik, by her mother, Cheryl (Ulrich) Smith, by her brother Chad Smith and his wife Mary, by her sister-in-law Larissa Critelli and her husband John.  She will be forever remembered and loved by her two nieces and two nephews: Courtney and Justin Critelli & Thomas “TJ” and Rosalia Smith.  Predeceased by her father William B. Smith.

Sherri faced the challenges of life with resilience and strength, and her loving nature endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her positive impact on friends and family was immeasurable, and her memory will be forever etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate to share her journey.

Relatives and friends will be received on Monday evening November 27, 2023 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Pancoast Funeral Home, 676 S. Main Road, Vineland, NJ and again on Tuesday November 28 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Old Pine Street Church, 412 Pine Street, Philadelphia PA 19106 where her funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM.
