Book Discussion with Dr. Joseph Kelly

January 21, 2021
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Virtual via Zoom Meeting

Greetings!  You are invited to what promises to be an engaging discussion with Dr. Joseph Kelly, author of the widely-acclaimed book, Marooned:  Jamestown, Shipwreck, and a New History of America’s Origin (Bloomsbury, 2018).  This discussion will be held virtually via ZOOM Webinar, Thursday, 21 Jan 2020, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.  A link to register, with instructions for joining, follows below.

So why would “Mayflower” descendants be interested in Jamestowne?

Dr. Kelly presents a novel theory on America’s origins, and his central figure is our own Stephen Hopkins (1581-1644).  Hopkins was the only “Mayflower” passenger with prior experience in the New World.  On 24 Jan 1610, Hopkins stood shackled on makeshift gallows in Bermuda, convicted of treason for stirring the same passions for self-governance that would inform the “Mayflower Compact” a decade later.

Dr. Kelly is Director of Irish and Irish-American Studies at the College of Charleston (South Carolina).  He is also author of America's Longest Siege:  Charleston, Slavery, and the Slow March Toward Civil War (Harry N. Abrams, 2013), and editor of the Seagull Reader series.  Dr. Kelly describes Stephen Hopkins as “the first true American … the most important unacknowledged founding father of our country.”  Join us as we discuss the epic story of early Jamestowne, the harrowing shipwreck of the “Sea Venture” in a hurricane, and Hopkins’ remarkable survival and impact.
